SAMPLE ITINERARY - SOUTH LUANGWA & VICTORIA FALLS, ZAMBIA

Day 1 10-hour overnight flight from London Heathrow to Lusaka, Zambia.


Day 2 Early morning arrival at Lusaka Airport. Onward 1-hour flight to Mfuwe Airport where you will be met and transported to a camp in the South Luangwa National Park, situated at the southern end of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. This is Zambia’s premier game viewing park and one of the finest in all Africa, where you will enjoy a unique type of habitat seldom seen elsewhere in Africa.

Accommodation in en-suite thatched chalets offers a classic combination of rustic but comfortable or, for the more adventurous, the bush camp (June to October only) offers tented accommodation with camp beds, bush shower and toilets on one of the best sites in the valley. Ideally positioned in a tranquil setting with views over the lagoon where wildlife is abundant, the bar and restaurant are conveniently located in the centre of the camp.

Day 3 Enjoy the sounds and smell of the bush on your early-morning game drive in an open-topped safari vehicle; see and hear the full beauty of Luangwa in the stunning light of early morning. A knowledgeable guide will be able to tell you all you want to know about the mammals, birds and trees in the park. Return to camp for a relaxed brunch and siesta or swim before meeting up for afternoon tea. The night drive leaves camp in the late afternoon. Accompanied by a “spotter”, your guide will take you on a combined safari with two hours of daylight and two hours of darkness during which you will discover some of Luangwa’s nocturnal secrets and witness at close hand the change in animal life, from diurnal to nocturnal activities, perhaps even spotting the shy and elusive leopard. Returning to camp around 8 p.m. you will enjoy a three-course dinner and a chance to relax around the campfire before retiring to your chalet.

Day 5 Early transfer to Mfuwe Airport for onward flight to Livingstone, via Lusaka, arriving Livingstone around mid-day. You will be met and transferred to the Lodge located in a delightfully secluded position on the banks of the spectacular Zambezi River where hippo and elephant are frequent visitors. You will enjoy well-appointed, comfortable accommodation in thatched cottages with private bathrooms, grouped around the main lodge area and swimming pool. Afternoon visit to the breathtaking Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya - “the smoke that thunders” - this natural phenomenon is over one mile wide with an immense curtain of water cascading more than 100m to the gorge below.

Day 6 Morning at leisure. Afternoon Elephant Back Safari. Enjoy the unforgettable experience of a ride through wilderness areas on the largest animal in Africa. Guests get to interact with the elephants under the watchful eye of expert handlers.

Day 7 Morning Lion Encounter. Interact with two or three lion cubs for 1½ hours. A unique experience enabling you to walk with these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. The encounter is fully supervised by an experienced and qualified team. Evening Sunset Cruise. Enjoy all-inclusive drinks and snacks while taking in the sights and sounds of the Zambezi as you wonder at the awesome African sunset.

Day 8 One Day/One Night Canoe Safari. ‘Sundowner’ drinks - a southern African tradition – will be enjoyed before dinner and a night to remember experienced beneath the African stars. Guests accompanied and cared for by professional guides.
Overnight camping on island – all inclusive

Day 9 Breakfast on the island, then enjoy the tranquillity of the Zambezi River and riverside game-viewing as you canoe back to shore. Afternoon at leisure.
Overnight at Lodge – full board, excluding drinks

Day 10 Full Day White Water Rafting. An exhilarating adrenaline-filled day riding Grade 5 rapids on the mighty Zambezi River, accompanied by an experienced guide. Lunch and beverages included.

Day 11 Morning at leisure, relaxing by the pool in the grounds of your lodge. Afternoon Livingstone Island High Tea. There is no more bizarre setting for afternoon tea – the island from which Dr Livingstone first witnessed the thundering majesty of the Victoria Falls and was so moved by the sight that he later wrote “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Tuck into an English high tea on the very lip of these world-famous falls, where the more adventurous can even take a swim in the natural rock pool near the edge of the falls.

Day 12 Morning transfer to Livingstone Airport for 1-hour flight to Lusaka. Transfer to lodge for overnight stopover in a private en-suite chalet, simple and stylish, with beautiful woodland views.

Day 13 Early morning transfer to Lusaka Airport for day flight to London, arriving London Heathrow around 18:00.

If the Luangwa experience is not for you, this itinerary can be varied by flying to Livingstone via Johannesburg in South Africa. On the return leg of your journey the flight would be Livingstone to Johannesburg on Day 12 for an onward connecting overnight flight to London Heathrow, giving you an early morning arrival on Day 13.
